A Nature Guide to the Southwest Tahoe Basin

The Tahoe Area's FIRST FIELD GUIDE!

Including Desolation Wilderness and Fallen Leaf Lake

Tahoe’s first regional field guide with easily accessible and scientifically accurate information on plants, animals and other natural history topics was announced recently.

Average Tahoe-area visitors as well as avid naturalists will enjoy using this book to identify and learn about the more than 450 species of plants, animals, birds and more that are included, with over 350 photographs and drawings.

Author Charles Quinn is a Stanford-educated naturalist and has spent the past eleven years working with The Nature Conservancy in Oregon. He first visited the Tahoe area at age one, returning every year since 6th grade, he reports. He met and married his wife here and his own family now makes annual treks. He says, “This area is truly special to me, as it set me upon my eventual career, being such a foundation in my early life.”

The foreword by Donald Kennedy, editor of Science, reads:

“As this remarkable book indicates, [Quinn] has become an unparalleled expert on the biology of the north Sierra. Thus this is much more than a manual for identifying the different kinds of birds, trees, reptiles, and so on. It links looking and knowing in an unexpectedly instructive way. It is hard to imagine a better field companion for trips in the Tahoe Sierra than this book.”

—Donald Kennedy, Editor-in-Chief, Science,
and President emeritus, Stanford University

Augmented by essays on geology, fire, medicinal plants and lake ecology by Rebecca Chaplin , the book is a non-profit project. All writing and images were donated. The cost of printing was funded by the Peter and Helen Bing Fund for Nature, Art and Education at Stanford Sierra Camp, and all proceeds from the sale of this book will return to the fund.
